A Survey on sitting posture monitoring systems

Abstract: Spinal pain caused by the bad sitting posture can affect adults and young people. The slouching and leaning for long hours using computers and portable electronic devices is the main cause of the back problems. Recently, in order to prevent the spinal pain, sitting posture monitoring systems have been developed in the literature to assess the posture of a seated person in real-time and improve sitting posture. The purpose of this study is to review the recent posture monitoring systems. The review is based on … Show more

“…As is depicted in the line graph and human postural states, the higher the bending level, the higher the resistance value (Figure 1a,b). This sensor is distinguished by its lower cost, longer life, and lower sensitivity to detecting even a small bending degree of the spine [16].…”

“…IMU sensors have attracted interest in medical, aerospace and other engineering fields because of its small size, high portability, low cost, and measurement accuracy, which enables them to be inserted directly into people's clothes as well [1,16]. It detects the exact position of shoulder posture of right and left lateral flexion in space, as shown in Figure 3a, and sends real-time data to the controller, which helps to monitor the detected values in real-time [1,11,20].…”

“…In light of these issues, there has been a growing interest in the development of systems capable of continuously monitoring either employees’ sitting behavior and posture, or cardiovascular health, but, as of now, no system proposed in the literature has integrated both of these monitoring modules. Sitting Posture Monitoring Systems (SPMSs) can be roughly divided into three main categories: computer vision based systems, wearable sensor systems and sensory chairs [ 12 ]. Even within each of these categories, system design and sitting posture classification approaches vary widely, but sensory chair-based SPMSs are by far the most ubiquitous in terms of sensor integration, user comfort and practicality.…”

“…ere are several ways to monitor people's postures. Tlili [3] made an overview of systems on sitting posture monitoring. According to the principle of how to obtain this information, the systems can be divide into three main categories based on the following:…”
