A Swedish heterodyne facility instrument for the APEX telescope

Abstract: Aims. In March 2008, the APEX facility instrument was installed on the telescope at the site of Lliano Chajnantor in northern Chile. The main objective of the paper is to introduce the new instrument to the radio astronomical community. It describes the hardware configuration and presents some initial results from the on-sky commissioning. Methods. The heterodyne instrument covers frequencies between 211 GHz and 1390 GHz divided into four bands. The first three bands are sideband-separating mixers operating in… Show more

“…Since these are double-sideband receivers, three settings with slightly different band center frequencies (spaced by 80 MHz) were taken to identify blending from the other sideband. In 2008, we observed lines from different isotopologues of HCN, HCO + , and CO with the APEX-1, APEX-2 (Vassilev et al 2008), and CHAMP + receivers Güsten et al 2008), all of which are single-sideband receivers. CHAMP + allows simultaneous observations in the 690 GHz and the 850 GHz bands.…”

“…The pointing accuracy of the telescope has been determined at 2 (rms). We used the Swedish heterodyne facility instrument APEX-2 (Vassilev et al 2008) for the raster-mapping observations of ρ Oph A in the J = 3−2 rotational transition of the N 2 H + molecule. The central rest frequency is at 279 515.06711 MHz and the average zenith optical depth was 0.04.…”

“…The Swedish heterodyne facility instrument APEX-3 (Vassilev et al 2008), a double sideband receiver, was used together with the facility FFT spectrometer covering about 4 GHz. The observations were made in April and June 2014 under programme O-093.F-9306.…”
