A SWOT Analysis of Maritime Transportation and Security in the Gulf of Guinea

Abstract: The Gulf of Guinea has been spotlighted as a major international maritime security concern. Maritime traffic in this region has significantly increased with the advent of new findings of huge oil and gas deposits offshore. However, this region is riddled with numerous acts of maritime piracy. Recent figures indicate that approximately 300,000 vessels transit the Gulf of Guinea sea lanes annually. It is therefore obvious that any disruption to the free flow of traffic will have consequences on maritime transpor… Show more

“…However, piracy and sea robbery attacks against ships leads to destruction and economic wastages, which further perpetuates poverty and unemployment. Addressing poverty and youth unemployment factors will, therefore, lead to reduction in pirate attacks against ships, which will, subsequently, deflate the circular negative effect of the relationship between maritime insecurity and poverty in Nigeria (Nana & Ofosu-Boateng;2017;Onuoha, 2012). A unit increase in global attacks increases the poverty level by 0.00928, while a unit increase in local attacks against ships trading in Nigeria decreases the poverty level by 0.0271.…”

“…According to global reports, the region is now a dangerous hotspot for sea pirate attacks (UNCTAD, 2014). A study by Ofosu-Boateng (2017) attributed the observed increase in attacks to higher annual volume of marine traffic with about 300,000 vessels traversing the area servicing oil and gas exploration offshore the region. These together with geo-political tensions and loose security are major catalyst for pirate attack.…”
