Marine pharmacognosy is a relative new science field, which encompasses among others the chemical study of marine organisms, with the intention to detect new and known metabolites having potential biological activity. The present PhD which falls in the previously mentioned scientific area describes the isolation, structure elucidation and pharmacological evaluation of the isolated metabolites from the selected organisms: a) Acetabularia acetabulum (green alga), b) Cymodocea nodosa (marine angiosperm) and c) Odontella aurita, Galdieria sulphuraria, Chaetoceros sp. (microalgae). The extracts of the above organisms, after processing several chromatography techniques, provided 33 different metabolites which are structural elucidated based on their spectroscopic data. The green alga Acetabularia acetabulum (collected from Sounio Cape, Attica) provided eleven metabolites, six of which are new natural products, while all of them are isolated from A. acetabulum for the first time. One of them falls into the chemical category of carotenoids, six into the category of apocarotenoids, two are halogenated sesquiterpenes known from red alga and finally two are steroids.Marine angiosperm Cymodocea nodosa was collected from two different regions.
