A Synthetic Task Environment for Team Cognition Research

Abstract: A STE (Synthetic Task Environment) provides the context for a suite of synthetic tasks in which skills pertinent to the corresponding real-world task can be exercised in a controlled setting, thus bridging the gap between lab and field studies. The UAV (Uninhabited Air Vehicle)-STE described in this paper was designed to provide a flexible research platform, yet realistic task environment, for team performance research and the measurement of team cognition. The abstraction of task features from the real UAV ta… Show more

“…Spatial characteristics of the task scenarios include terrain features, weather obstructions, enemy activity, target priority, and restricted operating zones (ROZ) location. These characteristics are modified via a waypoint library that defines the scenario in terms of a world of waypoints, each with varying features (Cooke, Rivera, Shope, & Caukwell, 1999). Target waypoints are waypoints at which the photographer is able to take photographs and are located within the ROZ with prescribed entry and exit points.…”

“…Minecraft also has a history in human systems research where it has been used to study human-robot teams in a SAR environment (Bartlett and Cooke, 2015;Lematta et al, 2019). Cooke et al (1999) suggest that tasks, as opposed to technology or equipment, are what make STEs robust environments for research.…”

“…Using the operator knowledge represented in the taxonomy, we recently developed a UAV replanning task (Cook, Smallman, Lacson, & Manes, 2009) that is consistent with the key objectives and features of synthetic tasks (Cooke, Rivera, Shope, & Caukwell, 1999;Gugerty, et al, 1999;Martin, Lyon, & Schreiber, 1998): our synthetic UAV replanning task (1) focuses on the key perceptual 3-D spatial demands of en route replanning, (2) is reconfigurable for additional research, and (3) can be performed by non-expert operators.…”
