A system for managing critical knowledge for accelerator subsystems: Pansophy

Abstract: Accelerator development and construction projects often intentionally push the envelope of well-established technical performance and manageable complexity. In addition, the desire for efficient retention and exploitation of accumulated experience across the multi-decade life cycles of major installations calls for a robust yet userfriendly knowledge management system. To meet these needs, we are deploying a new web-based system at Jefferson Lab: Pansophy. This system is a custom integration of several commerc… Show more

“…The "Pansophy" system, as it came to be called, provided a convenient user interface with which to both structure and use a robust underlying database. [102][103][104] The system provides the tools for electronic "travelers" to be created directly by engineers and scientists. These version-controlled travelers are both "prescriptive" and "descriptive", in that they specify actions and procedures, and also collect data and part-specific comments from each implementation of a task.…”

“…Pansophy, a web-based system conceived as a vehicle for collecting, managing and exploiting the data from SRF accelerator subsystem development and production efforts, began development in early 2000 [1]. Because data from the construction of the original CEBAF accelerator was saved in paper form, it was cumbersome to search, and trends were difficult to spot.…”
