Given the great emphasis being placed on energy efficiency in contemporary society, in which the smart grid plays a prominent role, this is an opportune time to explore methodologies for appropriately representing system attributes. We suggest this is important for effective system development because the primary factor in correctly mapping between requirements and implementation is how representative the system design is of requirements. Since representativeness is an abstract term, it is imperative to identify ways to quantify it. We use several metrics. Among these is the priority of system elements (e.g., electric generator) in the set of elements, based on importance to system success. Secondly, fault tree analysis is employed to identify elements that operate in an unsafe state and the probabilities of reaching these unsafe states. Thirdly, state transition analysis provides traces of which elements are on the routes to unsafe states. These analyses provide the information needed to reduce element faults and failures on a priority basis.

We present a new device driver generation approach capable of automatically generating a large portion of device drivers code, and this for different operating systems (OSes). This approach is based on a model-driven methodology, where a tiny language is utilized to model the device features and abstract low-level complexities of a driver. The approach can handle different driver architectures. We demonstrate the genericity of the approach by applying it to a fairly mature device class that has standardized interfaces, and also to a brand-new device that has significant functionality differences. The code was generated for two OSes, one targeting the embedded space and the other a full featured one.

Recent FPGAs allow the design of efficient and complex Heterogeneous Systems-on-Chip (HSoC). Namely, these systems are composed of several processors, hardware accelerators as well as communication media between all these components. Performances provided by HSoCs make them really interesting for data-flow applications, especially image processing applications. The use of this kind of architecture provides good performances but the drawback is an increase of the programming complexity.This complexity is due to the heterogeneous deployment of the application on the platform. Some functions are implemented in software to run on a processor, whereas other functions are implemented in hardware to run in a reconfigurable partition of the FPGA. This article aims to define a programming model based on the Synchronous Data-Flow model, in order to abstract the heterogeneity of the implementation and to leverage the communication issue between software and hardware actors.
