A Systematic Consideration of Observational Design Decisions in the Theory Construction Process

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to develop an explicit protocol for gaining the use of new concepts from external and transdisciplinary sources during the theory construction process. We are concerned with Churchman's ‘sweeping in’ of alternative perspectives and with inductive research. The potential for innovation that concepts from external disciplines bring is balanced by the risks of working outside a researcher's area of expertise. There is potential for researcher bias when gathering new ideas as well as when … Show more

“…However, best guess, reasons, intuition or assumptions could prove difficult to evaluate as they are of the page and so not accessible as the printed text. From a conceptual science perspective, good policies (in this sense, ones that reach their goals) are those with ‘an internal logic that interrelates the conceptual elements’ (Shaw & Allen, 2012: 486).…”

“…In short, advancing theory in the social sciences has been a primarily intuitive endeavour (Meehl 2002). While those kinds of efforts at integration may be based on careful thinking and deep understanding by experts, they often end up seemingly eclectic (Clark et al 2011), producing perspectives that are more multidisciplinary instead of being fully interdisciplinary, highlighting the difficulty of building useful theory when using non-systematic methods (Shaw and Allen 2012). With a more formal, more structured approach to integration we might expect to accelerate and improve the process of integration to develop better theories to resolve the highly complex problems we face more effectively.…”

“…Shaw and Allen (2012) note that theory construction becomes problematic when the conceptual components are chosen in a way that is not systematic. In general, those who develop theory, ''rarely build their theories in textbook fashion from the bottom-up.…”
