“…Group counseling environments have the potential to provide spaces for discussions centered on oppression, power, privilege, multiple identities, and intersectionality (Stevenson, 2017) that aid in the development of critical consciousness. Further, extensive evidence supports the utility and effectiveness of small-group counseling in P–12 schools that help youth develop a positive identity and self-esteem, increase academic achievement/motivation, increase postsecondary readiness, address racial trauma, and emotional well-being, and build trusting relationships with peers and family (Levy & Travis, 2020; Marino et al, 2015; Steen et al, 2022). In foundational group counseling landscape research, Steen and colleagues (2007) discovered that school counselors were indeed facilitating group counseling interventions but several barriers disrupted these efforts including scheduling, administrator support, and colleagues’ understanding of the efficacy of groups.…”
