The UK government responsibilizes its citizens when it comes to their cyber security, as do other countries. Governments provide excellent advice online, but do not provide any other direct support. Responsibilization is viable when: (1) risk management activities require only ubiquitous skills, (2) a failure to manage the risk does not affect others in the person’s community. Cybersecurity fails on both counts. Consider that parents and carers are effectively being responsibilized to educate their children about cybersecurity, given that young children cannot be expected to consult and act upon government advice. Previous research suggests that UK parents embrace this responsibility but need help in keeping up to date with cybersecurity ‘best practice’. In this paper, we consider a number of possible sources of parental advice, and conclude that support workers would be best placed to support parents in this domain. We then carried out a study to gauge the acceptability of this source of help. We find that parents would be willing to accept advice from this source, and suggest that cybersecurity academics be recruited to train support workers to ensure that they have current ‘best practice’ cybersecurity knowledge to impart to parents.

Los niños son el segmento más vulnerable de esta sociedad ciberfísica, pudiendo ser fácilmente explotados por su bajo nivel de percepción del riesgo cibernético. Iniciar la educación y el desarrollo de habilidades digitales en edades tempranas incentiva a esta población a seguir en el futuro carreras profesionales como ciberseguridad, aportando de manera sostenible a cerrar la brecha de la fuerza laboral en este campo. Mediante un enfoque cualitativo, se realizó una revisión documental, una revisión de la literatura y una consulta a expertos académicos, para proponer un programa de alfabetización digital en edades tempranas. A manera de caso de estudio se presenta el Programa de Alfabetización Digital de la Universidad Internacional de las Américas de Costa Rica y las experiencias con el Taller de Ciberseguridad para Niños, dirigido hacia el desarrollo de habilidades digitales, el bienestar cibernético en edades tempranas y el interés de los niños en seguir nuevas carreras profesionales. Se propone reducir la brecha de la fuerza laboral en puestos sobre ciberseguridad a través de programas de formación en edades tempranas, que concienticen sobre los riesgos en seguridad cibernética, su evolución, su impacto en la sociedad y destaquen su importancia en un mundo cada vez más dominado por la tecnología.

This article substantiates the relevance of the research problem, which consists in the need to solve state tasks in the field of ensuring cybersecurity of social substructures of society, which is the education system. The current legal framework of the problem under study is in urgent need of improvement and development in projection on the educational environment of the school. This is due to the clearly insufficient awareness of its subjects in matters of cybersecurity, cyber defense and cyber ethics. This is confirmed not only by the empirical observations of the authors of this article, but also by the practical lack of clear pedagogical measures of cybersecurity of the school environment. The purpose of the study is to reveal the specifics of cybersecurity of the school environment. To achieve this goal, the authors of the article interpret the concept of cybersecurity in the context of the environmental approach in education, perceived as a methodology of scientific and pedagogical research. Based on these methodological positions, the authors of the article propose a detailed system of parameters and criteria for the examination of cybersecurity of the school environment. The developed system of parameters and criteria for the examination of cybersecurity of the school environment acts not only as a measuring tool, but also as a pedagogical mechanism for the formation of such an environment. Further prospects of the research are connected with the discussion in the scientific and professional audience of the modified methodology of the cybersecurity examination of the school environment proposed by us, its approbation in the real educational process and refinement taking into account the opinions of scientists and teachers.
