A systematic review and meta‐analysis: Effectiveness of internet empowerment‐based self‐management interventions on adults with metabolic diseases

Abstract: The intervention significantly improve the health status of adults with metabolic diseases, in particular their exercise habits, HbA1c levels, body weight, empowerment and quality of life. The intervention provides more convenient and faster access to healthcare for busy individuals with time constraints. These results suggest that healthcare professionals could develop accessible and friendly interactive online interfaces for patients to expand the use of these interventions in the clinical setting.

“…Relational factors such as rapport, familiarity, and approachability were perceived as necessary for lifestyle risk reduction conversations. Continuing relationships contribute to the familiarity and enablement necessary to overcome barriers to behaviour change and self‐management (Desborough et al, ; Kuo, Su, & Lin, ). In general practice, older patients and those presenting with multi‐morbidity as well as practitioners with more experience and long‐standing relationships with their patients are more probably to experience relational continuity (Kristjansson et al, ).…”

“…The DATEMP questionnaire makes it possible to measure the level of empowerment in adult patients with AD, and is therefore useful in monitoring the interventions aimed at increasing empowerment over time. Our hypothesis, based on other pathologies such as psoriasis, is that programs focused on increasing empowerment may result in clinical improvement of the disease [11,13,20]. In fact there is evidence that the offer of an atopic dermatitis program that is educational and proactive (one of the dimensions of empowerment) also improves clinical outcomes in AD [30].…”
