A systematic review identifying outcomes and outcome measures in Dupuytren’s disease research

Abstract: This systematic review summarizes the outcome reporting standards in Dupuytren’s disease treatment research. A search of Ovid Medline, Ovid Embase, and CINAHL was conducted. Randomized controlled trials, cohort studies, and case series published between 1997 and 2017, investigating treatment of Dupuytren’s disease with fasciectomy, fasciotomy, or collagenase, were eligible for inclusion. Range of motion was the most commonly reported outcome, appearing in 77% of included studies. Outcomes, such as range of mot… Show more

“…Data from such studies cannot be pooled in systematic reviews or meta-analyses because of the heterogeneity of outcomes. “…The heterogeneity of reporting and measuring outcomes is an existing trend in Dupuytren's research. 36 The lack of reported analyses of variance also limited measurement of heterogeneity between studies. By excluding articles from recurrence rates with follow-up times of less than 1 year, contractures that recur shortly after CCH treatment are overlooked; conversely, the lack of long-term follow-up also presents challenges in effectively tracking recurrences.…”

“…In case of clear functional disorders, surgical intervention with removal of the palmar aponeurosis (fasciotomy with full skin transplantation, Z-plastic, or secondary granulation) is indicated. By injecting the clostridium histolyticum isolated collagenase, a significant reduction in contractures and an improvement in finger mobility can be achieved (Karpinski et al 2020).…”
