A systematic review of argumentation techniques for multi-agent systems research

Abstract: The ability to build arguments that express thoughts is crucial for intelligent interactions among human beings. Thus, argumentation techniques have been applied for years in fields, such as rhetoric or artificial intelligence. More specifically, the agents paradigm fits into the use of these types of techniques because agents shape a society in which they interact to make arrangements or to decide future actions. Those interactions can be modelled using argumentation techniques. Therefore, the application of … Show more

“…It has been recognised in the literature [22,37] that the argumentation mechanism provides a natural way of reasoning with conflicting information while retaining much of the process a human being would apply in such situations. Thus, defeasible argumentation provides an attractive paradigm for conceptualising common-sense reasoning, and its importance has been shown in different areas of Artificial Intelligence such as multi-agent systems [10], recommender systems [5], decision support systems [23], legal systems [34], agent internal reasoning [2], multi-agent argumentation [42,45], agent dialogues [7,8], among others (see [37]). In particular, DeLP has been used to equip agents with a qualitative reasoning mechanism to infer recommendations in expert and recommender systems [9,24,41].…”

“…Argumentation is a reasoning model which has been of application in multi-agent systems for years (see [16] for an overview). The development of argumentation techniques and of their computation drives such applications.…”

“…It is widely used in areas such as multi-agent systems, commonsense reasoning, decision making (see e.g. [2,18,33,36,43]). Preferences in argumentation, as well as in AI on the whole, are used to, for example, qualify the uncertainty of, or discriminate over, information.…”
