A Systematic Review of Computational Fluid Dynamics Models in the Stomach and Small Intestine

Abstract: The use of in silico models to improve our understanding of the fluid dynamics within the gastrointestinal tract has increased over the last few decades. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is an in silico technique that can be used to characterize and model the fluid mechanics driving the digestion of food and absorption of nutrients. This systematic review outlines the current methodologies used to develop CFD models of the stomach and small intestine, and summarizes the flow and mixing patterns predicted fro… Show more

“…The stomach model has two openings where additional boundary conditions are needed—at the fundus and at the duodenum (labelled ‘A’ and ‘B’ in figure 3 , respectively). All recent computational models of the stomach incorporate antral wall motility [ 45 ]; however, gastric tone, which is the primary driver for emptying, has not been incorporated in most models. In the current study, we incorporate the effect of gastric tone and thereby include the two key biomechanical mechanisms for the gastric phase of digestion—antral motility and gastric tone.…”

“…CFD can simulate the motility and geometry of the intestinal system. The flow patterns in the digestion process have been examined by some developed CFD models to study fundamental mechanisms, including 2D (two-dimensional) CFD [7][8][9] and 3D (three-dimensional) CFD [10][11][12][13] models. The behavior of Newtonian fluids has been studied by Ferrua and Singh [13] for gastric flow by a CFD simulation, allowing the prediction and visualization of the flow patterns, shear stresses, and shear rates.…”
