A systematic review of congestion control in internet of vehicles and vehicular ad hoc networks: Techniques, challenges, and open issues

Atefeh Hemmati,
Mani Zarei,
Amir Masoud Rahmani

Abstract: SummaryThe Internet of Vehicles (IoV) integrates various technologies to enable real‐time data exchange between vehicles, pedestrians, roadside units, unmanned aerial vehicles, road‐added things, and so forth. IoV is an improved internet‐enabled vehicular ad hoc network (VANET), which is similarly affected by data traffic aggravated by time‐variant network density and the network's topological and informational changes. A high density of simultaneous vehicular communication leads to channel saturation and data… Show more

“…One of the most important aspects is increasing road safety. Through real-time analysis of vehicle data, IoV systems can detect potential hazards such as sudden braking and quickly warn nearby vehicles, preventing accidents before they happen (Partovi et al , 2023; Bangare et al , 2021; Hemmati et al , 2023b). In addition, intelligent traffic management systems can use big data insights to increase mobility efficiency and decrease congestion and travel time for commuters.…”

“…The time‐varying road traffic will have profound impacts on the formation of vehicular connectivity and the stability of inter‐vehicle communications (IVC) 5 . Vehicular connectivity in a dense VANET is generally changeless but a traffic jam is inherently found to be more probable to encounter congestion problems and to be harmed by collision, and packet loss ratio (PLR) 6,7 . In the case of a near‐capacity traffic flow condition, V2V communication is frangible, and forwarding messages via V2R would be a better choice for such delay‐tolerant networks (DTNs) and forwarders must adopt appropriate plans to continue disseminating information.…”
