A Systematic Review of Cyberstalking Victimization and Offending Behaviors

Abstract: A systematic review of literature investigating cyberstalking offending and victimization was conducted, considering multiple key words and phrases used to label the behavior: cyberstalking, cyber dating abuse, cybervictimization, Internet, interpersonal electronic surveillance, and victimization. The following electronic databases, with the indication of peer-reviewed journal articles as a requirement, were searched: Academic Search Complete, Criminal Justice Database (ProQuest), Google, JSTOR and PsychInfo. … Show more

“…According to some studies, both men and women have an equal chance of becoming victims of cyber-obsessive stalking (Dreßing et al, 2014;Gunn et al, 2021). Most studies (Marcum and Higgins, 2021;Sammons and Cross, 2017) indicate that women are disproportionately more likely to be victims, while more studies (Ahlgrim and Terrance, 2018;Pereira and Matos, 2015) indicate that men are more likely to be perpetrators. A scant amount of research has been done on male victimization (Fissel & Reyns, 2019).…”

“…Participants also used the term “stalking” to describe several forms of behavior. In empirical research, cyberstalking is often used to describe repetitive, unwanted electronic communication with intent to intimidate a person and provoke negative emotions, such as fear or distress (Kaur et al, 2021; Marcum & Higgins, 2021). In contrast, participants in this study reserved the term “stalking” to describe monitoring their partner’s location and delving into their partner’s social media history and/or current social media behavior, which may reflect a disconnect between terminology researchers use to describe cyber DA behaviors and how young adults describe such behaviors.…”
