A systematic review of diagnostic performance of quantitative tests to assess musculoskeletal disorders in hand-arm vibration syndrome

Abstract: The purpose was to systematically review the published reports for the clinical utility of quantitative objective tests commonly used for diagnosing musculoskeletal disorders in hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). Two reviewers independently conducted a computerized literature search in PubMed and Scopus using predefined criteria, and relevant papers were identified. The articles were screened in several stages and considered for final inclusion. Quality of the selected papers was evaluated by a modified QUADA… Show more

“…Of all the three components of HAVS, the musculoskeletal component is less well defined and less studied. The association between vibration exposure and musculoskeletal outcomes, despite having been reported, is still unclear due to the strong confounding effect of other ergonomic stressors related to manual work . About half of the workers complained of having symptoms of a musculoskeletal component of HAVS complications.…”

“…In HAVS, the peripheral and central nervous systems are affected, [ 5 ] which can lead to vascular, bone and joint, and tendon and muscle diseases. [ 9 , 10 ] There is a direct correlation between the disease and the magnitude and duration of hand-arm vibration and cold temperatures. [ 11 ] In the cases here in, no vibrating tools were used by the patients, but they did engage in taxing labor using their hands (using such tools as a sledgehammer, hammer, saw, and carry stones).…”
