A Systematic Review of Factors Related to Employment Outcomes for Adults with Visual Impairments

Abstract: Introduction: The purpose of this study was to conduct a systematic review of survey-based research on predictors or correlates of employment outcomes for individuals with visual impairments (i.e., those who are blind or have low vision). Methods: We used a three-pronged systematic search process to identify quantitative, English, peer-reviewed articles published from 1990 to August 2018 that included analyses of factors related to employment in American adults with visual impairments. We coded all included ar… Show more

“…Such comparisons are much more difficult when studies use a variety of definitions and terms. Second, the use of the RSA-911 data allowed for very large sample sizes relative to other studies of this population (Goertz et al, 2010; Lund & Cmar, submitted, 2019). These larger sample sizes may have facilitated the detection of small but statistically significant factors that may not have been evident in analyses with smaller sample sizes.…”

“…A substantial amount of research has also supported the importance of higher education for employment outcomes of people with visual impairments (i.e., those who are blind or have low vision; Capella-McDonnall, 2005; Cimarolli & Wang, 2006; Cmar et al, 2018; Giesen & Cavenaugh, 2013; Leonard et al, 1999; McDonnall, 2016; Wolffe et al, 1992). Recent systematic literature reviews have documented the significant association between education and employment for this population (Lund & Cmar, 2019a, 2019b). Education was the variable that was most consistently related to employment in analyses of survey data (Lund & Cmar, 2019a) and analyses of Rehabilitation Services Administration Case Service Report data of vocational rehabilitation consumers (Lund & Cmar, 2019b).…”

“…Two personal characteristics that have typically been associated with employment for this population were not significant predictors in this study—education level and health (Lund & Cmar, 2019b). Both approached but did not reach significance, perhaps overshadowed by the large effect of disability benefit receipt, which brings to attention one of the limitations of this study: sample size.…”
