A systematic review of research on climate change adaptation policy and practice in Africa and South Asia deltas

Abstract: Recent years have witnessed a rapid increase in scholarship on adaptation to climate change. Peer-reviewed literature, governmental communiqués and reports are increasingly reporting formulated and implemented climate change adaptation policies, strategies and plans of action. A large part of this literature describes general policy strategies, while there is limited published work on adaptation interventions at the local scale. The generality of adaptation is not only limited to strategies but also in terms o… Show more

“…The low number of papers on deltas, particularly in Africa, was a concern and prompted a further analysis of the search criteria. The original 1,170 records were revisited and specifically searched for the deltas identified in a companion article by Lwasa (2014) focusing on deltas in these hotspot regions. While no new papers were identified dealing with deltas and biophysical climate impacts, there were some instances in Africa where publications were identified dealing with upstream portions of rivers captured under the semi-arid searches (e.g.…”

“…This paper is part of a special edition commissioned by the UK Department for International Development (DFID) and Canada's International Development Research Centre (IDRC) to inform the development of their Collaborative Adaptation Research Initiative in Africa and Asia (CARIAA) program. The paper compliments six articles in the special edition that apply to varying degrees systematic approaches to reviewing current knowledge on adaptation to climate change in global vulnerability hotspots (Berrang-Ford et al this issue;Bizikova et al 2015;De Souza et al 2015;Ford et al 2014;Kilroy 2015;Lwasa 2014;Sud et al 2015;Tucker et al 2014).…”

“…This requires new methods, tools and frameworks to measure the actual progress on adaptation Chen et al 2016;Magnan 2016;Magnan and Ribera 2016). An ability to track adaptation progress is highly relevant for governments at different scales looking to prioritise their investments to effectively adapt and to define how to access climate adaptation funding, especially in developing countries (Araos et al , 2016Lwasa 2015;Sud et al 2015). Likewise, it is fundamental to reduce policy uncertainties and provide the right guidance to the private sector, such as robust criteria to define their funding strategies (Tribbia and Moser 2008).…”
