A Systematic Review of the Uterine Relaxant Effect of Herbal Sources

Abstract: Laboring uterus response to dissimilar tocolytics differs from that of non-laboring uterus. In order to find a treatment for preterm labor, future studies should focus on the laboring uterus and also determine the structure activity relationship of the different tocolytics. This systematic review was registered to the PROSPERO with code number CRD42015027551.

“…New drugs or herbal extracts are being used in in vitro and in vivo PTB models to explore their possible therapeutic benefits. There are some herbal extract compounds, such as the terpene and flavonoid classes, that have showed relaxing properties on uterine smooth muscle (Rezaeizadeh, Hantoushzadeh, Ghiasi, Nikfar, & Abdollahi, 2016). Citral is present in the oils of several plants, including lemon myrtle (Sharma et al, 2019).…”

“…Therefore, new drugs or herbal extracts are being used in preterm birth models both in vitro and in vivo in order to explore their possible therapeutic benefits. Recently, some herbal extract compounds, such as the terpene and flavonoid classes, have been linked to properties with a relaxing effect on uterine smooth muscle [ 17 ]. α-Bisabolol is a natural unsaturated monocyclic sesquiterpene alcohol obtained mainly from Matricaria recutita and Myoporum crassifolium [ 8 9 ].…”

“…Phytochemical screening of the leaves for both plants revealed the presence of terpenoids in FDA aqueous extract (Umi Romaizatul Amiera et al 2014). this compound also has been implicated as chemical stimuli that can trigger smooth muscle contraction (Rezaeizadeh et al 2016;Sommer et al 2017). however, the exact role of terpenoids and its association with increased expression level of phosphorylated p42/44 MAPK protein is not known.…”
