A systematic review of the use of quality-of-life instruments in randomized controlled trials for psoriasis

Abstract: Planners of interventional studies in psoriasis face the dilemma of selecting suitable quality-of-life (QoL) measures. Systematic reviews have the potential of identifying psychometrically sound measures in a given therapeutic area, while guiding the development of practice guidelines. The aim of this systematic review was to generate evidence of the use of QoL instruments in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) for interventions in psoriasis. The methodology followed the PRISMA guidelines. Six databases were s… Show more

“…It serves as an easy‐to‐use instrument and a useful benchmark to evaluate treatment efficacy both in routine clinical work and in a variety of researches . It is by far the most commonly applied HRQoL tool in randomized controlled trials for interventions in psoriasis . According to the European consensus, DLQI is among the diagnostic criteria of moderate‐to‐severe psoriasis to determine which patients need to be offered systemic treatments .…”

“…However, although PASI provides a composite assessment of the signs and extent of psoriasis, it does not yield information about the effect psoriasis has on patients’ lives . The Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) is the most commonly used instrument to assess the health‐related quality of life (HRQoL) of patients with psoriasis . However, increasing evidence confirms only weak to moderate correlations between the PASI and DLQI .…”

“…The DLQI is the most commonly used QoL instrument in randomized controlled trials of psoriasis . It has been shown to correlate with patients’ psoriasis area and severity index (PASI) change during the treatments and thus is now considered to be a triage tool for psoriasis management strategies in the UK .…”
