A systemic inquiry into the delay factors in South African electrical distribution projects

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the delay factors in South African electrical distribution projects and demonstrate the interlaced relationship between the identified project delay factors. Design/methodology/approach This research employs interactive management (IM) methodology to construct a model achieving the research purpose. The IM methodology is anchored in the soft systems thinking. Its inquiry process mainly comprises four phases: idea generation, idea clarification, idea structuring… Show more

“…Jahangoshai Rezaee et al (2021) utilized ISM to investigate the causal relationships between the delay factors and the evaluation factors to determine the root causes of delays in the Iranian construction projects. Likewise, Ntshangase and Tuan (2019) explored the delay factors in South African electrical distribution projects and demonstrated the interlaced relationship between the identified project delay factors, using the ISM method. Shoar and Chileshe (2021) deployed ISM to provide a hierarchical model of design change causes in building construction projects.…”

“…Project delay factors imply negative aspects. Identifying the delay factors to 'avoid' delay is an objective in project management (Ntshangase and Tuan 2019). Cost overrun could result in undesirable effects.…”

“…Factors were grouped into six groups, political, financial, technical, managerial, procurement and human resources. Ntshangase and Tuan (2019) explored the delay factors in South African electrical distribution projects and structured a systemic model showing that a loop comprising three factors is the driver leading to the delays in the electrical distribution projects. Factors are poor communication, poor planning and project scheduling not properly done.…”
