A taxonomic review of Phlebotomus (Idiophlebotomus) (Psychodidae)

Abstract: Five known species (aspevulus Quate & Fairchild, erehicolus Quate, pholetor Quate & Fairchild, sejunctus Quate, and stellae Quate) of the cavernicolous subgenus Phlebutomus (Zdiophlebotomus)are discussed in relation to newly recognized species from West Malaysia and India. P.frondifer n.sp. and P.tubijiev nsp. are described and a key to the adults of all seven species is given. General features of the subgenus are discussed, with particular reference to the functional relationships between the specialized morp… Show more

“…Identification was based on the morphology of the male genitalia and female head and spermatechae; the keys described by Lewis were followed. 11,12 The remaining carcasses of the females were ground separately in 50 μL NET10 buffer and preserved for further DNA extraction and PCR analyses.…”

“…Altogether, 21 taxa were considered. In addition to the long-recognised subgenera of Phlebotomus (Lewis 1982), the new taxa Kasaulius Lewis 1982, Transphlebotomus Artemiev & Neronov 1984and Chinius Leng 1987 were included. Neophlebotomus França & Parrot 1920 (synonymous with Rondanomyia, according to Lewis 1978) and Parrotomyia Theodor 1958 were retained in the genus Sergentomyia, sensu França & Parrot 1920.…”

“…An examination of the available specimens permitted us to select discriminant characters. Lewis (1982) considered that the genus Phlebotomus Rondani & Berté 1840 was composed of about 110 specific or infra-specific taxa, unevenly grouped into 12 subgenera. Four arguments led to the elimination of certain taxa from the numerical analysis: validity does not seem to be totally established on solid bases (morphological as well as systematic); subspecific position is probable; inevitable constraints on the coding of the characters in closely related taxa; finally, and above all, a crippling imbalance in the calculation tables caused by missing data Eventually 85 OTU's were retained.…”

“…Spelaeophlebotomus and IdiophlebotomusWhilst excluded from the genus Phlebotomus by some authors (Abonnenc 1972, Artemiev & Neronov 1984, these two taxa are retained as subgenera by others (Lewis et al 1977, Lewis 1982, in the interests of stability. The phenetic classifications, factorial analysis or ascending hierarchical classifications, show a large distance between these two groups and the other subgenera.…”
