A teaching–learning method based on CFD assisted with matlab programming for hydraulic machinery courses

Abstract: This article presents a teaching-learning methodology for the course ''Hydropower and Ocean Power'' in the Master of Renewable Energy Program at the Technical University of Cartagena (Spain). In line with the famous ''Bologna Declaration,'' a new teaching approach is proposed, in order to ensure that students acquire skills related to the ability of analyzing and designing Hydraulic Machinery. The roles of the tutor facilitator, as well as the use of freehand sketches and the Matlab programming to optimize the… Show more

“…In engineering education, DOE have been used as a tool in determining interactions between factors in a design. In [13,14], both authors promoted the use of DOE concept in selecting factors or parameters for improving teaching-learning methods in the field of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Marine Engineering Course. However, they didn't disclose explicitly the underlying procedures.…”

“…Vicens and Zamora and Pujol et al have observed that the inclusion of CFD in the hydraulic machinery courses enables students to better appreciate the concepts and prepares them for research by improving the analytical abilities. They also believe that integration of physical experiments and CFD simulations tremendously improves the efficiency of the teaching and learning process.…”

“…The project found that most students felt that they were able to complete the project with minimum supervision. Based on CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) aided with Matlab programming, Vicéns and Zamora proposed a teaching‐ learning methodology for the course “Hydropower and Ocean Power” in the Master of Renewable Energy Program at the Technical University of Cartagena (Spain). In order to ensure that students master the skills related to hydraulic mechanical analysis and design, a new teaching method was proposed to avoid the epistemological obstacles.…”
