“…Although bite-wing radiographs have been widely used in epidemiologieal surveys and clinical trials the efficiency aud validity of many of these studies has been affected by the loss of information due to poor radiographic technique (111)-Ihere are three main reasons for this: overlapping interproximal surfaces, poor positioning of film and the lack of reproducibility of the technique. Several investigators (12)(13)(14)(15) have tried to improve the reproducibility of their radiographs by using the teeth to relocate an aiming device in the mouth. This has been accomplished by taking an impression of the teeth using wax, aerylic resin or rubber itnpression material and good reprodueibility was reported in the studies that evaluated sueh methods.…”

“…It has been stated that to produce serial periodic identical radiographs the foe us-to-object, and the object-to-film distance, the horizontal and vertical angulation ofthe X-ray beam, the position ofthe film in relation to the object, the film density and contrast must be kept constant (13). Several attempts have been made to restrict errors in horizontal and vertical angulation ofthe X-ray beam by recording an impression ofthe teeth on wax or acrylic bite blocks which were fixed to the film holding device (13)(14)(15)(16)(17). Several of these authors (14,16) attempted to evaluate the reproducibility of their methods with seemingly good results.…”
