For safety and environmental risk assessments of nanomaterials (NMs) and to provide essential toxicity data, nano-specific toxicities, or excess toxicities, of ZnO, CuO, and Ag nanoparticles (NPs) (20, 20, and 30 nm, respectively) to Escherichia coli and Saccharomyces cerevisiae in short-term (6 h) and long-term (48 h) bioassays were quantified based on a toxic ratio. ZnO NPs exhibited no nano-specific toxicities, reflecting similar toxicities as ZnO bulk particles (BPs) (as well as zinc salt). However, CuO and Ag NPs yielded distinctly nano-specific toxicities when compared with their BPs. According to their nano-specific toxicities, the capability of these NPs in eliciting hazardous effects on humans and the environment was as follows: CuO > Ag > ZnO NPs. Moreover, long-term bioassays were more sensitive to nano-specific toxicity than short-term bioassays. Overall, nano-specific toxicity is a meaningful measurement to evaluate the environmental risk of NPs. The log T e particle value is a useful parameter for quantifying NP nano-specific toxicity and enabling comparisons of international toxicological data. Furthermore, this value could be used to determine the environmental risk of NPs.

Nanoparticle (NP) self-assemblies have attracted an increasing amount of attention in recent years because of their potential application in the construction of novel nanodevices. The controllable transformation of NP self-assemblies (NPS) between a polar and nonpolar environment is required for many specific applications because of their different properties in different environments. In this article, water-soluble luminescent CdS/CdTe NPS were synthesized using thioglycolic acid as a capping agent. The stiff and straight NPS bundles became loose after phase transfer from an aqueous to an organic phase. Subsequently, the NPS transferred to the aqueous phase. The loose structure transformed into many twisted nanoribbons. Additionally, hybrid photodetectors made using the organic-soluble NPS and P3HT polymers were fabricated, and we found that the NPS/P3HT blend may be perfect for light detection. The organic-soluble NPS are potentially useful for the fabrication of semiconductor nanojunctions.

Polymer brush-grafted particles (i.e., hairy particles) capable of undergoing direct, especially reversible, phase transfer from one liquid phase to another immiscible liquid phase in response to environmental changes have received growing interest due to their great potential in a wide variety of applications. This article is intended to review recent exciting advances in stimuli-triggered phase transfer of hairy particles in liquid-liquid biphasic systems. We start with a discussion of the mechanism of particle transfer across a liquid-liquid interface and progress to the synthesis of polymer brushes grafted on particles and the transfer of hairy particles between two immiscible liquid phases induced by various external stimuli, including temperature, pH, ionic strength, light, and solvents. The applications of thermally triggered phase transfer of hairy particles in catalysis (thermoregulated phase transfer catalysis) are discussed, followed by a summary and our perspective on future development.
