A test of special relativity with stored lithium ions

Abstract: 1 o confidence level. below 2.7-10*4 by the present experiment. These limits are given at a dilatation factor. The fourth order limit of this deviation is set sets a second order limit of 1.1·10'6 for any deviation from the time of v = 6.4% c. A precision of AV/V < 9.1O·9 has been obtained, which as a test of the time dilatation factor Y = (1-{32)*1/2 at an ion velocity 7Li+ the Doppler shift has been measured by saturation spectroscopy theory of relativity. With an optical A type three level system of allows … Show more

“…In a preferred frame Σ (usually the cosmic microwave background), the speed of light c 0 =const. In a frame S moving with the velocity v with respect to Σ, c/c [18]. KT experiments test velocity invariance of c, using the periodic modulation of v provided by Earth's orbit [6] or rotation [17].…”

“…A first version of this experiment that employed collinear optical-optical double-resonance spectroscopy on a Λ-type three-level system formed by the Fig. 2, has set the thitherto best absolute bound of a j j < 8 Â 10 À7 [12]. The limiting factor was the large observed linewidth of the Λ-resonance of almost 60 MHz, compared to a natural width of 3.8 MHz.…”

“…The hyperfine structure of the 3 S 1 state is almost two orders of magnitude larger than the 2-3 GHz line width associated with longitudinal momentum spread in the storage ring. Previous work at the TSR has studied the analogue transitions in the lithium ion [45]. The light collection region will require minor modification for deep UV but would essentially follow the same design.…”

“…The application of DR of few-electron ions to nuclear ground state properties was pioneered at the ESR and TSR. Figures 7 and 8 show two remarkable examples of an isotope shift experiment with stable three-electron Nd ions ( A Nd 57+ , A=142, 150) [137] and a hyperfine splitting study of 45 Sc 18+ [139], respectively, in order to visualize the potential of the technique. The latter experiment was carried out at the ultra-cold target station of the TSR storage ring and benefitted from its unprecedented experimental performance.…”
