A test of the quasi-circumplex structure of human values

Abstract: Schwartz's value system (SVS) has been widely used in diVerent disciplines (e.g., psychology, management, and marketing). Although the value structure seems to be validated when data are analyzed through multidimensional scaling, we show that the quasi-circumplex structure of human values is not supported when conWrmatory analysis approaches (e.g., CIRCUM and constrained conWrmatory factor analysis) are used. Based on two samples of French and Swiss respondents, conWrmatory tests of SVS provide little support … Show more

“…This taxonomy of values, which is called the Schwartz's value system (SVS) (Perrinjaquet, Furrer, Usunier, Cestre, & Valette-Florence, 2007), was commonly represented by Schwartz and his colleagues as a two dimensional, circular structure representing a continuum of values (Figure 1). The position of human values in Figure 1 shows values' degree of proximity or disconformity between them (Schwartz, 1992(Schwartz, , 1994.…”

“…However, this model has also been criticized for the psychometric scale and collinearity issues observed between the values (Olver & Mooradian, 2003;Thøgersen & Ölander, 2002). Other scholars have argued that the empirical findings using the human values framework fail to provide convincing arguments for Schwartz's SVS structure (Perrinjaquet et al, 2007).…”

“…The alphas and CR greater than or equal to .70, along with factor loadings that exceed .50, suggest acceptable reliability and convergent validity (Nunnally and Bernstein, 1994). We tested seven-factor models rather than the seven dimensions separately so that we could investigate the discriminant validity of the seven response strategies simultaneously (Perrinjaquet et al, 2007). We employed maximum likelihood estimation procedures, because the data do not strongly violate multivariate normality assumptions (McDonald and Ho, 2002).…”

“…Conservation includes tradition which is the continuity of customs and ideas, conformity which is restraining actions within group norms, and security which is maintaining social stability. Strong empirical support for Schwartz's conclusion has been provided by studies conducted in over 60 countries (Perrinjaquet et al, 2007). Fischer and Schwartz (2011) claim that value priorities show more agreement than disagreement across countries.…”
