A Theoretical Review of Management and Information Systems Using a Critical Communications Theory

Abstract: Critical theory makes a substantial contribution to understanding communication by conceptualizing the nature of information as relational, i.e. a property that is not solely of a message. 'Knowing' is an active, constructive process (Hosking and Morley, 1991). More (1999) highlighted the general absence of a clear conception of communication in studies of knowledge management. Choo's (1998) sophisticated model of knowledge management is a stark example of thisthat author did not nd it appropriate (necessary?)… Show more

“…They are closely linked to our understanding of the nature of being (ontology) but also to our view of right and wrong (ethics) or the nature of humankind (anthropology). These implications, which are often discussed under the heading of "paradigm" go far beyond what we can discuss in this brief paper (Orlikowski & Baroudi, 1991;Varey, Wood-Harper & Wood, 2002). The question of truth is important in this essay because it has to do with the difference between information and mis-/dis-information.…”

“…Empirical studies of CMC, such as email and Intranet, demonstrated how Habermas' TCA can explain the democratizing potential of CMC and specified organizational conditions necessary to realize such potential (Cecez-Kecmanovic and Janson, 2000;Cecez-Kecmanovic, 2001). Finally, in a recent paper Varey et al (2002) adopted TCA to demonstrate the political nature of communication in organizations and the role of IS in the production and distribution of information and knowledge. Given that Habermas's TCA has not been applied in the context of e-commerce we will briefly introduce some basic concepts and explain their relevance to studying e-commerce.…”

“…The idea of emancipation is to "help eliminate the causes of unwarranted alienation and domination and thereby enhance the opportunities for realizing human potential" [48, p. 69]. Emancipatory concerns are frequently linked to concepts that appear to hinder emancipation such as alienation [68] authenticity [69], identity [35] or a limited rationality [54,17,71,82,23]. Critical researchers in IS have investigated matters of power and empowerment in systems failure [88], the digital divide [52] or gender issues in IS [51].…”

“…Another concept related to power and empowerment and central to critical research in IS is emancipation [2,3,42,66,81,20,82,59]. The idea of emancipation is to "help eliminate the causes of unwarranted alienation and domination and thereby enhance the opportunities for realizing human potential" [48, p. 69].…”
