Abstract:Active transport in epithelia is discussed in terms of the relationships between oxygen consumption and sodium flux as affected by each of the two corresponding thermodynamic forces. Analysis is presented of the use of nonequilibrium thermodynamics as a total in elucidating coupling and stoichiometry, and in evaluating drug action in the system. The analysis leads to the quantitative characterization of active transport in "two-flow" systems in terms of two plots: oxygen consumption nad sodium flow, each as a … Show more
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
