A thermodynamic method for the derivation of the solidus and liquidus curves from a set of experimental liquidus points

Abstract: A thermodynamic method is presented which makes possible the correct derivation of solidus and liquidus curves from a set of experimental liquidus points. In an iterative procedure, which is based on the equal-G curve and which uses intermediate phase diagram calculations, the liquidus of the calculated phase diagram is made to run through the experimental liquidus points. In addition, information about the thermodynamic mixing properties of the system is obtained_ Results are given for the systems p-dichlorob… Show more

“…The metastable extensions of these loops end in the theoretical metastable melting points of the pure substances corresponding to a phase that is assumed to be isomorphous with the phase for which the extension of the loop is done. To estimate the fcc and bcc metastable melting points of the AMP and PG metastable phases, the narrow stable [C $ #L] and [C ' #L] branches in the AMP/PG system were extrapolated to X"1 and X"0, respectively, by means of a simple procedure in terms of the equalGibbs-curve (EGC) method (28,29). The values of the metastable points determined are summarized in Table 1.…”

“…Therefore the solidus was obtained by calculation, using the LIQFIT method. (4,11,12) LIQFIT is an iterative procedure for phase-diagram calculations, in which the liquidus is made to pass through a set of experimental liquidus points. Apart from the experimental liquidus data, the input for LIQFIT consists of the thermodynamic properties of the pure substances and the excess Gibbs energy of either the mixed crystalline state (G E, s ) or the liquid state (G E, l ).…”
