A Three-Photo-Detector Optical Sensor Accurately Localizes a Mobile Robot Indoors by Using Two Infrared Light-Emitting Diodes

Abstract: Indoor positioning systems are facing to the demand of large-scale industrial applications in mobile robotics. It is still challenging to create an indoor positioning system that is easily embeddable, accurate, robust and power efficient. We constructed an easily embeddable, low-power optical sensor named InLock without lens to localize a mobile robot indoors moving at 0.20 m/s with an accuracy inferior to 10cm for the position and 0.1rad for the heading by using only three photo-detectors (PDs) and two infrar… Show more

“…Photodetectors are devices converting optical signals into electric signals, which are critical function units of extensive applications spanning LiFi communication, [ 210 ] target motion tracking, [ 211 ] optical imaging, [ 212 ] optoelectronic memory, [ 213 ] biometric authentication, [ 214 ] intelligent robots, [ 215 ] internet of things, [ 95 ] just to name a few. Basically, photocarriers are generated upon light excitation with sufficiently high photon energy, where electrons transit from conduction band to valence band of the photoactive materials.…”

“…The pandemic has placed higher demands on the automation and safety of robots and has promoted the debugging and innovation of related robots in technology. For example, a medical robot arm that can be controlled by Bluetooth from a smartphone [11]; mobile robots using a visible light communication system, which reduces the influence of traditional radio systems on patients and medical equipment [12]; and the indoor positioning system of mobile robot using optical sensors, which greatly improves their accuracy and stability [13]. The situation further increases the possibility of robots being used for emergency response in the event of a public health emergency.…”

“…In recent years, positioning methods have emerged one after another. Bernardes et al [2] proposed an online estimation algorithm based on a low-power optical sensor and an extended Kalman filter. Xing et al [3] proposed a multi-sensor fusion indoor positioning algorithm based on ArUco marking.…”
