A Trace Element Classification Tree for Chalcopyrite from Oktyabrsk Deposit, Norilsk–Talnakh Ore District, Russia: LA-ICPMS Study

Abstract: The Oktyabrsk PGE-Cu-Ni deposit is one of the largest resources in the Norilsk–Talnakh ore district, Russia, and it is viewed as an ore giant on a global scale. It contains three types of ores: massive, disseminated and veinlet-disseminated. The two former ore types were formed by a liquation process, whereas the latter was associated with fluid-induced selective metasomatic replacement of metamorphosed wall rocks. One of the major ore minerals in all ore types is chalcopyrite. In this study, we determined con… Show more

“…Unlike pyrite, detailed studies addressing the vectoring capacities of trace elements in pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite are limited (Duran et al, 2016(Duran et al, , 2019George et al, 2018aGeorge et al, , 2018bMarfin et al, 2020;Vasilopoulos et al, 2021). In this regard, our results demonstrate the ability of each investigated sulfide species to discriminate between different types of ore deposits, and between occurrences of free gold versus refractory gold ore.…”

“…Pyrite and chalcopyrite can be associated with significant amounts or rare metals incorporated as nano-scale mineral inclusions or as nanoparticles [13,14,[18][19][20][21][22]24]. These inclusions can be formed due to exsolution from the pyrite or chalcopyrite matrix, as well as through precipitation from the hydrothermal fluid into the growing mineral [14,24].…”
