A Transtheoretical Review on Smoking Cessation

Abstract: The objective of this review is to draw attention to smoking cessation in view of the Transtheoretical Model (TTM). A large body of literature published in the last 15 years was screened by searching the keywords of "Smoking" and "Transtheoretical Model." The Transtheoretical model consists of stages of change and is used to explain addictive behaviors such as smoking. It addresses behavioral change by taking into consideration factors such as planning and decision-making. This article examines this theory and… Show more

“…Behavior change theory may provide some explanation as to why a significant effect was identified in the trial of baseline recent former smokers but not in the trial of baseline current smokers, as well as considering why provision of lung cancer risk projections failed to predict follow-up lung cancer risk perceptions in either of the trials. One of the most dominant models of behavior change that has been applied extensively to smoking behavior [24][25][26] is the transtheoretical model of change (TTM). 27 The TTM proposes and systematically incorporates several concepts considered influential to behavior change, including the stages of change and the processes of change.…”

“…20 While cognitive and emotional processes precede the actual performing of specific health behaviors by an individual, the transtheoretical model addresses behavioral changes by considering factors such as planning and decision-making during behavioral transitions. 21 , 22 Intention and motivational factors to quit smoking appear to not be sufficient preconditions for successful smoking cessation. 23 Cognitive motivational factors such as self-efficacy may motivate for individuals to initiate health behaviors, but competence alone may not be sufficient to ensure the maintenance of this modification.…”
