“…In any case, they do not differ in condom use, which is quite low, as reported in a recent study (Gil-Llario et al, 2022). The systematic use of condoms is not only an unresolved issue for this type of population, but levels of systematic use are also low in the general population (Ballester-Arnal et al, 2022) and in specific populations (i.e., men who have sex with men, Morell-Mengual et al, 2021; or male sex workers, Ruiz-Palomino et al, 2010).…”

“…Consistently, studies have shown a large proportion of people in both countries who have insufficient knowledge about STIs, perceive a low risk of becoming infected, and/or have never been tested for STIs (e.g., Espada et al, 2015;Giménez-García et al, 2019Reis et al, 2013). Studies have also shown that people in both countries report not using condoms regularly (e.g., Alvarez-Bruned et al, 2015;Ballester-Arnal et al, 2022;Espada et al, 2016;Reis et al, 2018;Rodrigues et al, 2020).…”

“…In several reports, vaginal sex is the main sexual practice among university students, and the proportions of anal and oral sex are diverse [ 18 , 26 ]. Importantly, the practice of unsafe sex in college students is common, particularly, inconsistent condom use becomes one of the most relevant risk factors for STIs [ 27 ]. For vaginal sex we observed that only a minority in both women and men reported unprotected sex, reflecting preventive behavior against STIs or possible pregnancy.…”
