“…Where elemental S has been used as a fertilizer, extraction with KC140 is likely to underestimate the S status of the system because of its inability to dissolve unoxidized elemental S. Although it is known that elemental S can be extracted with organic solvents such as chloroform (Barrow 1968) and acetone (Hart 1961), it is unlikely that their inclusion in the extraction procedure will be successful in predicting the future S availability because of the effects of particle size, temperature and moisture in modifying S release from elemental S. The model which predicts S release from elemental S developed by McCaskill and Blair (1989) may prove a valuable adjunct to extraction with KC1-40 in these situations.…”

“…A gas chromatography method has also been described as an alternative for S 0 quantification in soil samples (Richard et al, 1977). The amount of S 0 dissolved in acetone can also be determined using turbidimetry after replacing the solvent with water, dispersing the colloidal S 0 and determining absorbance at 420 nm (Hart, 1961).
