A two‐dimensional analytical solution for groundwater flow in a leaky confined aquifer system near open tidal water

Abstract: Abstract:Groundwater in coastal areas is commonly disturbed by tidal fluctuations. A two-dimensional analytical solution is derived to describe the groundwater fluctuation in a leaky confined aquifer system near open tidal water under the assumption that the groundwater head in the confined aquifer fluctuates in response to sea tide whereas that of the overlying unconfined aquifer remains constant. The analytical solution presented here is an extension of the solution by Sun for two-dimensional groundwater flo… Show more

“…Leaky aquifer models consider flow exchanges between the main aquifer of concern and unconfined aquifers above and/or below. Jiao and Tang (, ), Tang and Jiao (), Li, Barry, and Jeng (), and Jeng, Li, and Barry () applied leaky aquifer models to coastal environments. Their results illustrated that leakage can damp out the groundwater response to tidal fluctuations compared with that in perfectly confined aquifers.…”

“…The number of solutions for two-dimensional periodic groundwater flow is much smaller. Sun [21] and Tang and Jiao [22] published solutions where the boundary condition along the straight coast is a damped Fourier series. Solutions for L-shaped aquifers were published in [23] and [24].…”

“…Jiao and Tang (1999) derived onedimensional analytical solution to study the influence of leakage on tidal response in a coastal leaky confined aquifer system. Tang and Jiao (2001) extended the solution by Sun (1997) for two-dimensional groundwater flow in a confined aquifer and the solution by Jiao and Tang (1999) for one-dimensional groundwater flow in a leaky confined aquifer. Ataie-Ashtiani et al (1999) used numerical model to simulate the groundwater flow in unconfined aquifers affected by periodic boundary condition.…”
