A Two‐Dimensional Organic Metal Based on Fullerene

“…Although, in few cases reliable crystal data have been obtained, [6][7][8] the experimental evidence for a JT effect in anionic C 60 has remained ambiguous, at least inconsistent. Unfortunately the progress in this field has been impaired by the difficulty in synthesis of high-quality single crystals.…”

“…3 A 2D metal based on C 60 .− is synthesized by applying the multicomponent concept. The ternary complex (MDABCO + )(C 60 .− )(TPC) (MDABCO + = N ‐methyldiazabicyclooctanium cation; TPC=triptycene) preserves metallic conductivity down to 1.9 K 4…”

“…16 There is another example of a layered fullerene complex (TMP + ) ⋅ (C 60 .− ) ⋅ C 6 H 5 CN (TMP + is the N , N , N ′‐trimethylpiperazinium cation), in which the C 60 .− radical anions are not dimerized down to 1.9 K in spite of a close arrangement 17. This complex is, however, probably insulating owing to essentially smaller and more anisotropic overlap integrals between fullerenes than those in the layered metal (MDABCO + )(C 60 .− )(TPC) 4. The understanding of factors that affect the formation of a metallic or nonmetallic antiferromagnetic ground state is very important in the design of new functional conducting compounds based on fullerenes.…”
