Congestion control maintains the number of packets within the network below a certain level to avoid low performance. And queue management is an important and critical component of any network implementation. RED is proposed to overcome some shortcomings of traditional methods for queue management and is proved to be more efficient than drop tail. In this paper we design a network environment using RED protocol and simulate it with NS-2. From the analysis of simulation results we find that the RED proactive discarding can provide low delay and proportional dropping fairness. On the other hand, when RED is used, more packets are lost and the throughput is a bit lower but very close to that when drop tail is used. To conclude, RED can offer high QoS in some aspects.

In this paper, we propose a novel realistic simulation tool-set known as MyEvalvid-NT for evaluating video delivery over simulated networks. This tool-set integrates Evalvid and NS2. Though PSNR is most often used to measure the perceived quality by an end user, it is time-consuming to calculate PSNR when evaluating a long video sequence. To avoid overhead, in this paper, we used decodable frame rate (Q) as our performance metric to evaluate the received video quality. We use a video transmission over erroneous wireless network to demonstrate the simulation using this tool-set. We also showed that Q can measure perceived video quality adequately as PSNR. With this tool-set, researchers can easily analyze their designed mechanisms, such as network protocols or QoS control schemes in a realistic simulation environment. In brief, researchers who utilize our proposed QoS assessment framework will be benefited in verifying their designs regarding video transmission over simulated network.

SUMMARYNetwork resources dimensioning and traffi c engineering infl uence the quality in provisioned services required by the Expedited Forwarding (EF) traffi c in production networks established through DiffServ over MPLS-enabled network. By modeling EF traffi c fl ows and the excess of network resources reserved for it, we derive the range of delay values which are required to support these fl ows at DiffServ nodes. This enables us to develop an end-to-end (e2e) delay budget-partitioning mechanism and traffi c-engineering techniques within a framework for supporting new premium QoS levels, which are differentiated based on e2e delay, jitter and loss. This framework enables ingress routers to control EF traffi c fl ow admission and select appropriate routing paths, with the goal of EF traffi c balancing, avoiding traffi c congestion and getting the most use out of the available network resources through traffi c engineering. As a result, this framework should enable Internet service providers to provide three performance levels of EF service class to their customers provided that their network is DiffServ MPLS TE aware.
