Purpose The purpose of this paper is to improve the lattice Boltzmann method’s ability to simulate a microflow under constant heat flux. Design/methodology/approach Develop the thermal lattice Boltzmann method based on double population of hydrodynamic and thermal distribution functions. Findings The buoyancy forces, caused by gravity, can change the hydrodynamic properties of the flow. As a result, the gravity term was included in the Boltzmann equation as an external force, and the equations were rewritten under new conditions. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the current study is the first attempt to investigate mixed-convection heat transfer in an inclined microchannel in a slip flow regime.

This paper focuses on pinch-off location and time during 2D droplet impact onto a wetted stationary cylinder using the lattice Boltzmann method. A general off-lattice boundary condition is implemented for the curved boundary. The boundary condition is examined by comparing the steady-state velocity profile of the Taylor-Couette flow with its analytical solution. Additionally, the spreading length of a droplet impacting a wetted stationary cylinder is shown to be in good agreement with the numerical data of the literature. In the results section, the effects of Reynolds, Weber, and Froude numbers, as well as the droplet/cylinder diameter ratio, on the pinch-off length and time are investigated. The simulations revealed that as the Froude number increases, the pinch-off time increases with a slope 1.39 times more than that of the pinch-off length decrease. Moreover, it is shown that the critical Weber number for onset of dripping process increases with increasing the Froude number or decreasing the Reynolds number.

PurposeThe paper targets on providing new experimental data for validation of the well-established mathematical models within the framework of the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM), which are applied to problems of casting processes in complex mould cavities.Design/methodology/approachAn experimental campaign aiming at the free-surface flow within a system of narrow channels is designed and executed under well-controlled laboratory conditions. An in-house lattice Boltzmann solver is implemented. Its algorithm is described in detail and its performance is tested thoroughly using both the newly recorded experimental data and well-known analytical benchmark tests.FindingsThe benchmark tests prove the ability of the implemented algorithm to provide a reliable solution when the surface tension effects become dominant. The convergence of the implemented method is assessed. The two new experimentally studied problems are resolved well by simulations using a coarse computational grid.Originality/valueA detailed set of original experimental data for validation of computational schemes for simulations of free-surface gravity-driven flow within a system of narrow channels is presented.
