Abstract-Recent developments in the area of Wireless sensor networks and Mobile ad hoc networks provide flexible and easyto-deploy communication means for a wide range of applications without any need for an infrastructure being pre-configured. Our paper studies performance of proactive and reactive routing protocols in a scenario with agro-sensors. Our results, achieved by simulating a network both in OPNET Modeler and NS2, show that the AODV routing protocol performs better for a large-scale network (where node density is higher) while the DSR routing protocol performs better in a small-scale network given the particular scenario we studied.

Abstract-Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks (MANET) are becoming an emanating technology among mobile devices. It is a structure less network of independent collection of wireless mobile nodes [Smart phones, Laptops, iPads, PDAs, Sensors etc.E connected by wireless links. Routing in Ad-hoc networks is challenging due to mobility of nodes and dynamically changing topology. The primary objective of the routing protocols is to establish an optimal and efficient route between the communicating nodes. Due to different network environments like varying number of nodes, speed, network load, it is difficult to figure out which routing protocol may perform well. This study investigates the performance and behavior of MANET routing protocols such as DSDV, AODV, NCPR and ZRP with a special focus on their comparison, functionality and issues. In this review, we analyzed about the protocols based on various quantitative parameters such as average throughput, packet delivery ratio, routing overhead and average end to end delay.

Routing is one of the crucial phenomenons in any networking principles. However, formulation and operation of the routing protocols are not so easy in dynamic topologies like mobile adhoc network. Since past decade there has been an evolution of various routing protocols in mobile adhoc network community that are claimed to be efficient by various researchers, it became important to understand their effectiveness. Hence, the proposed study chooses to understand and scale the effectiveness of the existing routing protocols in mobile adhoc network from routing overhead minimization and adoption of signal strength in enhancing route behavior. The study has discussed some of the significant contributions and interesting outcomes with support of discussion on precise research gaps of the existing literatures.
