The growth of structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data produced by the new applications is a result of the development and expansion of social networks, the Internet of Things, web technology, mobile devices, and other technologies. However, as traditional databases became less suitable to manage rapidly growing data quantity and the variety of data structures, a new class of database management systems named NoSQL is required to satisfy the new requirements. Although NoSQL databases are generally schemaless, significant research has been conducted on NoSQL design. A literature review presented in this paper let us claim the need to create modeling techniques to describe how to structure data in NoSQL databases. Key-value is one of the NoSQL families, which has received too little attention, especially about its design methodology. Most studies have focused on the other families like column-oriented and document-oriented. This paper aims to present a design approach named KVMod (key-value modeling) specific to key-value databases. The purpose is to provide to the scientific community and engineers a methodology for the design of key-value stores using the maximum automation and therefore the minimum human intervention, which equals the minimum of errors. A software tool called KVDesign has been implemented to automate the proposed methodology and thus the most time-consuming database modeling tasks. The complexity is also discussed to assess the efficiency of our proposed algorithms.

Data storage, in various SQL and NoSQL systems brings complexity to data querying when entities are fragmented because data is not always stored in the same system, plus heterogeneous structures can appear for entities. A unique query language is not sufficient to address data distribution and heterogeneity. Considering vertically distributed data, this work implements a framework capable of rewriting a user query addressed over a unified view to access all data and provide results with transparency. Our framework works with a conceptual model producing unified views to guarantee polystore querying without having to know data distribution nor data heterogeneity. It complements the initial query with intermediate operations. It is applied on an e-commerce scenario (UniBench benchmark) distributed vertically between relational and document-oriented databases. Performance results and the low impact of query rewriting process are illustrated in this work.

In the same way as with relational systems, schema evolution is a crucial aspect of NoSQL systems. But providing approaches and tools to support NoSQL schema evolution is more challenging than for relational databases. Not only are most NoSQL systems schemaless, but different data models exist without a standard specification for them. Moreover, recent proposals fail to address some key aspects related to the kinds of relationships between entities, the definition of relationship types, and the support of structural variation. In this article, we present a generic schema evolution approach able to support the most popular NoSQL data models (columnar, document, key-value, and graph) and the relational model. The proposal is based on the Orion language that implements a schema change operation taxonomy defined for the U-Schema unified data model that integrates NoSQL and relational abstractions. The consistency of the taxonomy operations is formally evaluated with Alloy, and the Orion semantics is expressed by translating operations into native code to update data and schema. Several database systems are supported, and the engine built for each of them has been validated by testing each individual SCO and refactoring study cases. A study of relative execution time of operations is also shown.
