A user's perspective on the application of adjustable speed drives and microprocessor control for HVAC savings

Abstract: When chilled water refrigeration loops and air handling units are operated manually, the resulting inefficiencies cause higher electrical power requirements than necessary.Installation of an automatic air conditioning control system maximizes chiller efficiency, minimizes the number of chilled water pumps operating while maintaining adequate capacity, and controls the air volume by varying fan speed to move only the air required to maintain desired room conditions. Project payback may be less than three years,… Show more

“…An initial survey of AHU fan loads can indicate that a number of motors are significantly under loaded, and thus operate in the efficiency range of 75-85%. When the induction motor operates in the efficiency range of 75-85 %, the power reduction achieved for each percentage point increase is around I kW / 100 hp from the actual load [2], thus same as pumping system, to increasing performance of the pump can be done by fixing the power of pump motor. The Result and Discussion bellow were presented using the method explained before, which composed of Pump Characteristic, Problem Identification and Solution analyzing.…”
