A validation study on the use of intra‐operative video recording as an objective assessment tool for core ENT surgery

Abstract: Video assessment of myringotomy and ventilation tube insertion may represent a valid, feasible tool for use in summative and formative assessments of trainee ENT surgeons. Remote scoring of assessment procedures minimises bias and enables blinding of raters. ENT is well positioned to benefit from video assessment due to the high number of surgical procedures within the specialty that are performed utilising digital technology.

Furthermore, if experts were assessed by direct observation, bias would be unavoidable.…”

“…This can facilitate the evaluation of residents and avoid the complexity in arranging video recordings or having a blinded rater. Similarly, Bowles et al have described their success with the evaluation of M+T using anonymized video recordings of their trainees . However, their study focused on recordings taken solely from the operating microscope.…”

“…The TSC and GRS show validity evidence for differentiating skill levels between residents and attending otolaryngologists. Adding to an already described validated rating scale by Bowles et al, the TSC and GRS also permit an evaluation of the participant's communication, autonomy, and teamwork . In particular, both tools identified items able to discriminate resident from staff performance.…”
