Summary
The Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model does not usually show an adequate scalability for small‐sized domains in large computing platforms. With this in mind, we propose a novel asynchronous software architecture for the WRF model that decouples the calculation of the solar radiation from the rest of the model. The experimental evaluation was conducted on real‐world data for forecasting the photovoltaic energy fed into the electrical grid of Uruguay by twelve solar power plants. The experimental results show that the proposed architecture can make a better use of the hardware resources available on the computing platform, reducing the total runtime of the WRF while maintaining the numerical accuracy.
