The theoretical paper presents development and verification of dimensionless groups describing a novel "smart" well completion with downhole water loop (DWL) used for stimulation of wells affected by water coning, where the drained water is injected downhole into the same aquifer. A well producing from an oil reservoir with bottom water coning is completed at the top of oil-for oil inflow and lifting, below the oil/water contact -for water drainage, and deeper in the same aquifer -for water injection. The two lower completions are hydraulically isolated from the top completion and work as a "water loop" with the drainage completion controlling OWC deformation (water cone) and injecting the drained water into the same aquifer. Computer simulations and a few field trials, to date, have shown that the smart well would produce more oil and sooner by removing water invasion to the oil-producing completion. However, designing such a well is site specific (i.e. controlled by multitude of the well, reservoir and fluid properties) and requires massive computations to balance the system hydrodynamically by finding a right combination of rates and completions placement. Dimensionless analysis is, therefore, needed to simplify the system's description with few dimensionless groups.The paper presents development and verification of dimensionless groups using past research, analogy of smart wells to conventional wells, and inspectional analysis that provides additional dimensionless groups -specific for DWL wells. The procedure used for finding the groups ---with detailed explanation of steps taken to solve the problem ---has been provided in the paper for those interested in scientific aspect of the study. Also discussed are the physical meanings of the dimensionless groups.What other professionals may find interesting in this paper is the way we verified the groups and used them for design. In this part of our study, the final cluster of dimensionless groups has been validated by testing sensitivity of the dimensionless well model output to varying physical parameters of the reservoir-well system without changing the values if the dimensionless groups in the input.

Scaling study of fluids displacement leads to proper understanding of pore-to-field scale flow mechanisms and correct evaluation of effectiveness of various recovery methods. Scaling study of immiscible forced gravity drainage, or gas assisted gravity drainage (GAGD), at laboratory scale and reservoir scale is considered here, lnspectional analysis (lA) is used to determine dimensionless scaling groups that characterize the fluid displacement and production mechanisms. It is found that scaling immiscible GAGD displacement in a homogeneous reservoir needs matching of five dimensionless scaling groups. For heterogeneous reservoirs, Dykstra-Parson coefficient which represents the permeability heterogeneity is also required. It is shown that none of the dimensionless groups can individually correlate the efficiency of the process. Hence, a new combined dimensionless group in reservoir scale which incorporates all the dominant forces is derived. The model is evaluated and verified by comparing its predictions with experimental results and extensive field simulations figures. The model is found reliable for fast oil recovery prediction of GAGD process after 2 pore volume injection in homogeneous and heterogeneous reservoirs and proposing their optimal production plan

Scaling Immiscible Displacements in Porous Media with Horizontal Wells

Despite the increase in horizontal well applications, scaling fluid displacement in porous medium with horizontal wells is yet to be fully investigated. Determining the conditions under which horizontal wells may lead to better oil recovery is of great importance to the petroleum industry. In this paper, a numerical sensitivity study was performed for several well configurations. The study is performed in order to reveal the functional relationships between the scaling groups governing the displacement and the performance of immiscible displacements in homogeneous reservoirs produced by horizontal wells. These relationships can be used as a quick prediction tool for the fractional oil recovery for any combinations of the scaling groups, thus eliminating the need for the expensive fine-mesh simulations. In addition, they provide the condition under which a horizontal well configuration may yield better recovery performance. These results have potential applications in modeling immiscible displacements and in the scaling of laboratory displacements to field conditions.
