A Verification of Waterflood Scaling in Heterogeneous Communicating Flow Models

Abstract: P. T. BAIL J. E. BOBEK* MEMBERS A/METhis paper presents the results of model studies made to demonstrate the validity of applying the "basic" waterflooding scaling relationships of Rapoport! to water-wet reservoirs composed of communicating strata of different permeability. Results demonstrate that these relationships can be validly applied, and also show the combined effect of variables on recovery. This demonstration was needed to confirm that the sizable effects of communicating strata on waterflood behavio… Show more

“…Groups from dimensional analysis can be combined to form global dimensionless groups, which can be more easily interpreted physically (Rapoport et al, 1953(Rapoport et al, , 1955. Some researchers recommend determining the final form of physically meaningful dimensionless groups by experiments (Offeringa et al, 1954;Croes and Schwarz, 1955;Carpenter, 1962;Bear, 1972).…”

“…Carpenter et al were the first who extended the Rapoport scaling relationship from homogeneous to heterogeneous media of communicating strata of different permeabilities [17,18]. Li and Lake presented a general scaling method for immiscible oil-water displacement in heterogeneous media on the basis of statistical techniques and inspectional analysis.…”

“…Rapoport (1955) presented for the first time an inspectional analysis derivation to come up with a scaling relationship of immiscible displacement of oil by cold water. The work was later extended by Geertsma et al (1956) to include hot water displacement and solvent flooding and by Carpenter et al (1962) to include heterogeneous media of communicating strata of different permeability. Van Daalen and van Domslaar (1972) used inspectional analysis to study scaling of models that have different geometries from that of the prototype.…”
