A Versatile Method To Prepare RAFT Agent Anchored Substrates and the Preparation of PMMA Grafted Nanoparticles

Abstract: Well-defined polymer brushes grafted onto silica nanoparticles were prepared by reversible addition−fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT). A versatile RAFT agent, 4-cyanopentanoic acid dithiobenzoate (CPDB), was attached to amino-functionalized colloidal silica nanoparticles by direct condensation of the mercaptothiazoline-activated CPDB with the surface amino groups. RAFT polymerizations were then conducted from the particle surface to graft polymer brushes to the particles. The kinetics of methy… Show more

“…Block-copolymer grafted SiO 2 nanoparticles were synthesized by sequential reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization from the surface of the nanoparticles [18]. RAFT provides quantitative control over the molecular weight and polydispersity (PDI) of each block.…”

“…26,27 1,3-Dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (9.65 g, 46.8 mmol) in distilled dichloromethane (80 ml) was added dropwise to the solution under an Ar atmosphere and the reaction mixture was then stirred at room temperature for 18 h. The solvent was removed by evaporation and purified by silica column chromatography using chloroform as an eluent. Activated CPD was obtained as a red oil (3.61 g, 24.4%).…”
