This study presents a design criterion developed for fatigue strengthening of a 120-year-old metallic railway bridge in Switzerland and presents a pre-stressed un-bonded reinforcement (PUR) system developed to apply the strengthening. The PUR system uses carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) plates; however, unlike conventional pre-stressed CFRP reinforcement methods, preparation of the existing metallic bridge surface is not required. This decreases the time required for on-site strengthening procedures. The principle of the constant life diagram (CLD) and two fatigue failure criteria (Johnson and Goodman) are described. Analytical formulations are developed based on the CLD method to determine the minimum CFRP pre-stress level required to prevent fatigue crack initiation. The PUR system uses an applied pre-stress force to reduce the mean stress level (and stress ratio) to shift an existing fatigue-susceptible metallic detail from the 'at risk' finite life regime to the 'safe' infinite life regime. The applied CLD method is particularly valuable when the stress history of the detail is not known and it is difficult to assess the remaining fatigue life. Developing for wireless sensor networks is a challenging task due to the severe resource constraints of the devices, the uncertainties of the environment, and the distributed nature of the system. Therefore, simulation is an essential tool for developing systems and for evaluating and comparing protocols at scale in a reproducible manner. Cycle-accurate emulation of sensor networks allows the execution of platform target code and provides deep insight into the behavior of the overall system including the important aspect of energy consumption. However, the required fidelity incurs a significant overhead and limits the size of the emulated networks considerably. We investigate the use of binary-tosource translation, where the machine code of an executable for the target platform is transformed to source code for the host platform and compiled as part of the emulator. Additionally, as part of this transformation we perform static analysis and optimize the generated code. We have implemented our approach based on the well-established emulator Avrora and show in our evaluation that this approach can lead to significantly higher simulation speeds.

ABSTRACT:The design of wireless sensor networks for distributed applications is the most challenging task due to the factors such as limited storage on nodes, variable data arrival rate and high energy cost of communication. In most Wireless Sensor Networks(WSN), the battery is the sole energy source of the sensor node. The Sensor nodes are expected to work on batteries for several months to a few years without replenishing. Thus, energy efficiency becomes a major issue in WSNs. Nowadays, it is desired to use the WSN in heterogeneous platform for multiple monitoring. The Software development for the sensor node is a tedious task due to the change in network topology. The present state of art has come up with different solutions to overcome the performance issues such as Memory overhead, Heterogeneity, Portability, Scalability, Cost and Quality of Service. An adaptive framework should minimize the resource consumption and provide an optimal solution for run-time Reconfiguration. This paper presents a detailed review on current state-of-the art in the Run-time Reconfigurations of Wireless Sensor Networks. An Analysis is made on the existing middleware approaches and an evaluation is done based on the parameters like Application Openness, Scalability, Heterogeneity, User Friendly Interface, Mobility and Power Efficiency. The paper identifies a few open research issues that must be addressed during the Run-Time Reconfigurations of Wireless Sensor Networks.
