A vertical handover scheme from WMAN to WLAN by taking into account the maximum available resource

Abstract: In heterogeneous wireless networks, the end users are expected to get more bandwidth from WLAN, other than from WMAN, for real time applications. However, adopting traditional Received Signal Strength (RSS) based approach could be inadequate for vertical handover. When WLAN is within the coverage of a WMAN Base Station, an associated Mobile Node (MN) can hardly connect to a WLAN Access Point (AP) due to the default high handover triggering threshold. On the other hand, without knowing the utilization informati… Show more

“…A similar scheme based on the Shannon capacity formula 64 as given in Equation is presented in the work of Wang and Kao 65 . They first scan the available resources of the networks and then select a network on the basis of maximum RSS, SINR, and data rate, and then perform handover to that network.…”

“…The issues of resource utilization were addressed by Ali et al [12] [13] where the authors have used coding-based implementation scheme to confirm more precision decision towards vertical handover. Remnant resource scale is used as an indicator factor for formulating a method of vertical handover as seen in the work of Wang and Kao [14]. Improvement of query mechanism for resources during vertical handover was investigated by Zahran and Sreenan [15] considering architecture designed using broker-based scheme for addressing delay problems too.…”

“…Researchers [8][9] analyzed and compared different algorithms for vertical handoff decisions, and validated the algorithms with different criteria. Wang, et al, [10] introduced a vertical handoff scheme which considered both received signal to noise ratio and loopback bandwidth and it was able to achieve the better throughput. Zeki, et al, [11] designed an intelligent vertical handoff algorithm on context aware.…”
