A very brief history of hydraulic technology during antiquity

Abstract: Hydraulic technology began during antiquity long before the great works of such investigators such as Leonardo da Vinci ). The history of hydraulic technology even began long before Archimedes (287-212 BC). It is amazing to see what was accomplished in the application of hydraulic technology during antiquity, millenniums before the development of the concepts of conservation of mass, energy, and momentum used in present-day hydraulic design. The first developments of hydraulic technology occurred with the deve… Show more

“…The durability of some of the systems which operated until the present times, as well as the support of the technologies and their scientific background by written documents enabled these technologies to be inherited by present societies despite the regressions that have occurred throughout centuries (e.g., in the Dark Ages) [18]. During the same period, Islamic cultures on the periphery of Europe, had religiously mandated high levels of personal hygiene, along with highly developed water supplies and adequate sanitation systems, which in several cases were the same old Greek and Roman facilities, preserved along the centuries [6,7].…”

“…Riverine ecosystems have been systematically modified on increasingly large scales since the invention of irrigation, perhaps as much as 7000 years ago (Mays 2008). However, their historic degradation has been accelerated periodically by surges of economic and/or technological power as empires and technologies erupted and expanded.…”

“…During the Neolithic age (ca. 5700-2800BC), the first successful efforts to control the flow of water were driven by agricultural needs (irrigation) and were implemented in Mesopotamia and Egypt [11]. The development of hydraulic technology has been traced, beginning with its infancy in the development of irrigated agriculture and water supply for urban centers.…”
